Common Core Math

As I prepare myself for the coming school year I can't help but think of the Common Core State Standards.  I'm ready for the challenge and I am very excited.

With all this SuMMeR! time on my hands I thought I would start Common Core Math centers for each of the standards.  What fun!

So when you see this ----->
you will know that it is a new center that corresponds with a CCSS standard.  The strand is also listed but you will have to go to the center to see the actual standard.

My first endeavor is PaNDa PuRSuiT that focuses on true and false addition equations.  Remember that the core's big focus is proving it....so make sure to check out the student independent work sheet!

Oh My Word

A teacher at my school told me about an app today that I am just dying over.  I'm just so excited!!  Thank you Lindsay :)  Now drumroll please..............My Books Pro!!!!!

My Books Pro

This app is from Android and it allows you to scan the barcodes of your books and manage a book catalog.  I am so looking forward to using this app in my class room to check out books to take home!!  It will help with book loss and student responsibility.  I had a stack of books I bought today and scanned them all in and it was so easy.  You can also scan in bulk.

Does anyone use this app?  Can you give me more details?

On another note I changed up my site for a little bit of summer cheer :)  To give credit where it is due I have to thank the ladies that are running our Summer Reading Academy for coming up with our motto, "Dare to be Wise!"  I just see it so fitting for the times we are living in and the changes that are coming.  So choose to be wise with me...it'll be fun!

Owls, Owls and Owls!

I just love owls!  I also love interesting color combinations that you might find in the home.  We spend so much time in our classrooms so why not feel like home :)

I have a new owl decor set on TPT that uses gray, yellow and aqua. Check it out!

AND here is a free owl graphic that I created today!!

Enjoy!

Addition to Owl Behavior Chart

A great suggestion was thrown my way {thanks Eva!} and I decided to act.  It was suggested to have a monthly behavior form for parents and teachers to communicate rather than a weekly.  Since we all have probably heard words close to budget cuts its smart to save where you can, even paper.

Here is the monthly chart for behavior to correspond with the chart below.  The intention is to check the box next to the child's behavior each day and to have initials from both a parent and teacher. The box in the bottom right corner is for the date and their is an additional space for more notes in the last column.  (The weekly chart is below as well.)

And here are the corresponding items from a previous post:

Enjoy!

Pennant Galore

When I saw pennants all over pinterest it made my heart happy!  Think of the places that have them...the circus, sales at stores!, car lots, parties and more.  They bring a sense of joy :)  I can't wait to see them displayed in my classroom!!

Here are two that I just love!
Cute pennant I can make myself! From First Grade Blue Skies

So I got started on a set of a-z pennants and then it expanded into two sets and then grew to add a welcome pennant...whew!  They are eye catching and I can't wait to print them and get some ribbon on them!

My summer has yet to begin but I hope yours is flourishing nicely!

Guided Reading or Bust!

Guided reading is a hard one....there is just so much to it and the students vary so greatly within the class and from year to year.

The guided reading pack where I outlined where to begin and where to go has been popular because it takes it step by step in a simple way:  Guided Reading pack
Now get organized even further with this new 8 page pack @ my TPT store!

All in the name 2

I got to thinking that The Name Game would make an equally fun math game as it is a literacy game.  Check it out: The Math Name Game

I want to also say a BIG thank you to those of you that support my blog!  I couldn't have gotten to 100,000 views without you!!

It's all in the name!

My partner and I have embarked into our Summer Reading Academy with excitement.  In my excitement I forgot that we were getting little kindergarteners that will be going into first.  The beginning of the year always shocks me because I go from independent little souls to needier ones.  I like both but it's a shift in my thinking that I always forget about.  The little ones today gave us their goldfish stares when we asked them to turn and talk....obviously we need to start at square one.

To get our little goldfish enthused about word work we have decided to start with their names!  Everyone loves a little focus especially on their very own name!  So I drew up a chart with the teacher names to start and we decided to do two names a day...well that's a lot of charting!  So I whipped up a little document to laminate as not to be wasteful with paper.

Here is the Name Game!

This was my original inspiration was from Growing Kinders.

Chevron goodness

I love me some chevron stripes so after I decided on the colors for my classroom next year I jumped online and ordered some....it is gorgeous!  Check it out:

So I'm not sure if I'm going to use it for crate seats or bulletin boards, you'll have to wait and see but I just love how it fits in with the owl stuff I made last week.

I love a fresh new start that a new year brings!

Teacher Talk

With the Common Core approaching I thought it might be a nice time for teachers to come together to plan for this adventure together.  I've been on teams that communicated well and those that have not.  I really like when I can find at least one person on the team that holds themselves to the same high standards that I hold myself to.  I enjoy delving more into my chosen career through my readings but not everyone is on the same path and not everyone wants to grow....we've all seen it.

Helen Keller said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."

BUT I think it takes a certain kind of organization to not let it get out of control (one person doing all the talking, talking and preparing but getting little done, etc.).  Time to plan together is so little. We are all go, go, go all the time.  So for your time to be effective and useful there need to be some ground rules that you all agree upon.  Here are some suggestions:

-Write down goals to accomplish.
-Set a time limit to each goal.
-Have one member take the time and stop when it goes over.
-Divide any work that is left and schedule when it is due.
-If someone is really passionate about something let them take the reigns and focus your attention on another need that is important to you.
-As a team member, know when to let go and when to stick to it.  That basically means that you need to know what is most important to you and fight for it.  Knowing what you will and won't deal with will really help with time.
-Try to see each person's strenghts and encourage them to use them.

I always assume that everyone wants to work as hard as I do but that isn't the case.  I am constantly reminded that everyone is working on their own path, so be patient!

Here is a planning sheet to keep your team on track: Teacher Talk

Good luck in getting your teams off to the right start!
