Adding and Subtracting Tens

When my students had trouble finding ten more and ten less on the hundred chart I thought I was in for it when adding and subtracting using place value.  Thank goodness I was wrong!

Do you ever have those, "I'm a terrible teacher!" moments?  That was what teaching ten less and ten more led me to.  I tried and tried.  I was pinning ideas and using them like crazy.  I was asking my peers what they were doing, what they were saying, what their anchor charts looked like and said.  Then finally one day they got it!  I'm not sure which trick, tip, strategy or tool that got them there but I sure am thankful!

Now we are adding and subtracting with place value.  To start this work we began with adding and subtracting tens.  I have two fun games that my students L.O.V.E. and beg for!  Click on the picture or the link to pick up your free copy.

Adding Tens Target- students drop two manipulatives (erasers, counters, cubes, etc.) and add together the tens.  (Clip art by Krista Wallden)

Subtracting Tens- Students work in partnerships, they drop one object on the left to find the whole and one object on the right to find the part they subtract.

My students used both white boards and math journals to show their thinking.

Here is our math board right now.  We are also working on a chart of strategies to use when adding and subtracting with place value.

I get so excited to see other people's math anchor charts!  I find so many brilliant ideas.  So if you would like to post your math charts to Instagram just list it with the hash tag: #mathanchorcharts

Here is the chart I posted today with the new hash tag:
(follow me on instagram @ thegototeacher)

and here is another just for fun.

Lastly, I will leave you with our adorable class quilt for the month of February!  The hearts next to them are filled with things they love.  One of them wrote 'bees.'  I guess our inquiry on bees had an impact!

Happy Wednesday!

Superheroes to the rescue!

Do you ever feel as if you need rescuing?  I have definitely been challenged this year and decided that I need to let go of some of the pressure I put on myself.  Can I get an AMEN?!
I TEACH WHAT'S YOUR SUPERPOWER ?
With that being said I am so appreciative of all the teachers that put their stuff out there to be shared.  The ideas that have come into my field of vision over the last few years has been transformative.  Just when I'm in need, someone comes to the rescue with a brilliant idea that I didn't have to labor over.  Thanks to all of you that work harder than you need to and share the love with all of us!!

I apologize in advance...this post is long overdue and just plain long!  Here are the links in advance:

We have been VERY busy since we got back from break.  Aren't we always busy though?  In math we are working on place value of tens and ones.  Below are a couple anchor charts.

Below are some pictures from activities and centers we have done.  You can get them all here ----->  Place Values: Tens and Ones

This is a place value mat that you spin the tens and ones, write the digit and build it.  At the bottom the students create greater than, less than sentences.

This is place value pick up sticks.  It is played just like pick up sticks.  At the end they count their tens and ones and find their digit.  The player with the greatest digit wins.

In this Superhero game, students pull a digit, build it, then find ten less and ten more.

These are the ten rods we made with pipe cleaners and beads that the students will use to when building digits.

This is a teacher copy of decomposing a digit.

Here are some of the activities: Place Values: Tens and Ones

This idea is from Mrs. T's First Grade Class....she is AH-MAZ-ING!

In science, we have moved on to gravity and it has been so much FUN!  Go to the link below to pick up my lesson plans and two experiments.

We used one of the experiments for our class Science Project.

The last thing I have tonight is my new Superhero Behavior Chart!  Some years I just can't find what will work for my little firsties.  This year we have tried so many things.  This is my attempt on finding something that works.  At the beginning of the year I had a similar chart but my kids weren't invested in it.  So I took it away and the students did self reflections each day to decide how their day was going or went.  This worked for some but definitely not all.

So on to this.  I did some Pinteresting this weekend and decided that they may be more invested with more incentives.  Incentives are not my goal but some years you just gotta do it!  When students make it to pink they will go on the Hall of Fame and get a bead to put on their new DOG TAG!  My dog tags aren't in yet so I'm improvising with beads until my package arrives.  As students earn more beads they can earn new dog tags.  I bought some more dog tags from Miss Nelson.  Since my mean time beads can't hold beads I bought bracelets to hold us over.  You will also notice little folders with smaller charts.  Those are for students that need the extra reminder!

You can get your chart here ----> SUPERHERO Behavior

Our new chart!

Hall of Fame for students that get on pink.

Cute little dog tags you get the first time you get on pink.

Our beads until the dog tags come in.

Bracelets for the beads.

Personal behavior charts in folders for students that need it.

In other news here is a picture of my new haircut.  I'm in love with it!
I hope you are enjoying your time back with your kiddos!

Toaster Tuesday

So I got a new toaster today and I'm excited :)  My dog seems to tear up any appliances that have any trace of a smell...so I've been without one.  The sad part about getting a new toaster is that I'm not eating carbs!!  All things that go in the toaster are full of carbs...darn.  I'll have to wait to use it :/

My boyfriend and I decided that we would like to go into the new year with a healthier lifestyle.  We have a list of lose rules that we are following.  And my sweet guy designed a supplement plan for me!  So we are eating healthy (well, Atkins diet), taking supplements and working out {almost} daily.  I feel so much better.  I have energy after school but more importantly energy during school.  Having this newfound energy makes me happier and therefore more patient.  It's good for me and my kiddos!  I've worked out before but all of this put together has just made it a whole new experience for me.

Well enough about me!

My class has moved into our place value unit.  I was personally wanting a few games that could vary on time for students to play in partnerships or with a group. And to be honest I wanted the materials to be easy for me to make...just in case they aren't used.  The games I have made all use the same set of feathers.

I also created a pack of 12 graphic organizers to correlate with the first grade Common Core Literature Standards.  You can find them at my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

Thursday night was our Science Fair night!  It was a blast.  I participated by holding the critter table down.  I brought my Water Dragon and I was loaned a Leopard Gecko, Hermit Crabs and a turtle.  I even let the kids (and parents too) hold superworms.  Below are the pictures of our 1st grade boards.  My class made the board the second from the right.  Our project was called Greasy, Greasy Chips.  Did you know that out of Mr. B's, Lays and Ruffles that Ruffles holds the most grease?  The night was a great celebration of science and it was a great turn out!

Using Place Value to Add and Subtract

Hi y'all!  We are moving from comparing numbers to using place value to add and subtract.  I know my little ones will need a lot of support because we struggled with comparing numbers. My new intern and I have planned some fun, interactive lessons that will meet every type of learner.  The kids will role play using their bodies as ten rods and their shoes as ones.  We also have a scavengar hunt in the works....and much more!  Here are the organizers I have created for support....

The first idea I got from Mrs. T's First Grade Class!  I changed it to include an addition problem.  {The second page of the document has ten rods to copy and use.}
The other ideas are straight from my head after going over our series, the content and our roadmaps.

So that's what I have for that {for now!}.  On another note, our class has our first intern!  She is a sweetie and has such great ideas!!  Especially math {which happens to not be my strong suit} in which my lessons tend to lack something at times.  I feel like I will continually learn and grow year after year...even from the newest of the new.  I feel very blessed as a teacher that she came into my life to make me even better at my job!

Enjoy your night!
