Positive Discipline in the Classroom

Positive Discipline in the Classroom, Revised 3rd Edition: Developing Mutual Respect, Cooperation, and Responsibility in Your Classroom
I am currently enjoying the book Positive Discipline in the Classroom by Nelsen, Lott and Glenn.  As I read I think, "I do this," or "I used to do this," or "I'm going to do this!"  Most of the ideas are reminders, such as listening to your students and appreciating what makes them special, loving your job, willingness to laugh, and involving students in choices.  Their suggestion is to have a class meeting daily in which the students decide topics, the whole class is involved, their is a format that allows freedom and it is a process in which students learn life skills.  Since the meetings are student driven most teachers keep an agenda book that the students sign up in to discuss problems or other classroom issues.  When a student approaches you with a problem the suggestion is to remind them that it can go into the class agenda or they can visit the wheel of choice and try two.  Of course you can handle issues if you need to.

I would love to hear if you have read the book and used it in your own classroom!  I'm looking forward to having daily class meetings :)

Here is a Wheel of Choice!

  1. I haven't read this book, but I have one of the books "Positive Discipline for Preschoolers". I use it at home with my 4 year old and, although most of the suggestions were not new to me, they were to my hubby. It definitely helped open his eyes on how to deal with our daughter when she has certain tantrums.
